Light-Emitting Diodes (LED)

LEDs are a type of semiconductor to emit light during use. LED lighting is an increasing solution in commercial and residential applications.

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that LED lighting adoption saved 1.3 quadrillion BTUs of energy consumption in the US in 2018 – equivalent to almost $15 billion dollars (USD) of cost savings. However, this represents a small fraction of total lighting applications, and they expect it will increase the use of LED technologies.

One benefit of LEDs is their extended field service life relative to older lighting technologies. Approximately up to 50,000 hours (around 17 years!) of lighting can be generated from an LED-based lighting device, several times the legacy technologies’ lifespan. Because the semiconductor component is so stable, a robust assembly process is critical in final LED device performance. To evaluate LED assemblies you can use shear testing and wire pull testing both.
